Exploring the Benefits of L-Theanine and Caffeine

WHAT IS CAFFEINE?

Caffeine is a natural stimulant that enhances focus and alertness by blocking adenosine, the neurotransmitter responsible for tiredness. At GOBBi, we use organic caffeine from green coffee beans for a clean energy boost.

Caffeine + L-Theanine

The Ultimate Productivity Duo ☕🔬

The combination of L-Theanine and caffeine creates a synergistic effect that enhances cognitive performance while minimizing the typical downsides of caffeine. L-Theanine, a calming amino acid, smooths out the jittery effects of caffeine by promoting alpha brain wave activity, leading to a state of relaxed alertness.

Study: The combined effects of L-theanine and caffeine on cognitive performance and mood

Key Findings

This study compared the effects of caffeine (50 mg) alone and combined with L-theanine (100 mg) on cognition and mood in healthy adults. Researchers tested 27 participants on tasks related to attention, memory, and mood after taking either caffeine, the combination, or a placebo. Caffeine alone increased alertness at 60 minutes and improved accuracy in an attention-switching task at 90 minutes. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine enhanced both speed and accuracy in attention-switching at 60 minutes and reduced distraction in a memory task at both time points. These findings support previous research showing that caffeine and L-theanine together improve focus and cognitive performance.

Study: L-theanine and caffeine in combination affect human cognition as evidenced by oscillatory alpha-band activity and attention task performance

Key Findings

This study explored how caffeine and L-theanine, two key components of tea, influence attention and brain activity. Over four days, participants received either a placebo, caffeine (50 mg), L-theanine (100 mg), or a combination of both, while researchers measured their ability to focus and respond to visual cues. The results showed that caffeine alone improved accuracy but did not increase the rate of correct responses, nor did L-theanine alone. However, when taken together, both accuracy and response success improved. Brain activity analysis suggested that the combination helps distribute attention more effectively, leading to better performance overall.

Study: Effects of L-Theanine Administration on Stress-Related Symptoms and Cognitive Functions in Healthy Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Key Findings

This randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover, double-blind study investigated the effects of four weeks of daily L-theanine supplementation on stress-related symptoms and cognitive performance in 30 healthy adults. Compared to placebo, L-theanine significantly reduced depression, anxiety, and sleep problems (as measured by the Self-rating Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). It also improved verbal fluency and executive function, especially among those who initially scored lower on verbal fluency tests. These findings suggest that L-theanine may help alleviate stress-related symptoms and enhance cognitive functions in the general population.

Study: Psychotropic effects of L-theanine and its clinical properties: From the management of anxiety and stress to a potential use in schizophrenia

Key Findings

This paper researches L-theanine, an amino acid from green tea, as a potentially valuable aid for managing anxiety and stress. The paper notes that daily doses of 200 to 400 mg over 8 weeks appear safe and effective for reducing acute and chronic anxiety. The paper further suggests exploring L-theanine’s use alongside other treatments and in higher doses through animal research.

Study: The effects of low doses of caffeine on human performance and mood.

Key Findings

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Psychopharmacology (Berl), Lieberman et al. (1987) administered low doses of caffeine (32–128 mg) to healthy adult volunteers and measured their cognitive performance and mood. The researchers found that even the smallest dose improved tasks requiring alertness and sustained attention, and participants also reported a more positive mood with reduced fatigue. These findings suggest that low doses of caffeine can significantly enhance cognitive function and mood without requiring higher levels that might produce undesirable side effects.

Study: Effects of caffeine on human behavior.

Key Findings

This paper provides a comprehensive review of how caffeine influences various aspects of human behavior, including cognitive performance, mood, and psychomotor skills. The findings suggest that moderate caffeine intake can enhance alertness, attention, and reaction time, while also potentially improving mood and reducing fatigue. The paper also addresses tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, and individual differences in sensitivity to caffeine, underscoring the importance of responsible consumption. Overall, the review concludes that, when consumed in moderate amounts, caffeine has generally positive effects on human behavior and performance.
